Bath remains a special and historic place to visit and is a firm favourite with both overseas and domestic visitors alike. Located in the South-West of England county of Somerset, the city famously known for its natural hot springs, Roman baths and honey-coloured 18th century Georgian architecture. Bath was awarded a World Heritage Site status in 1987.
The city became a spa around 60 AD when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon, although hot springs were known even before then. The water originates via rains from the nearby Mendip Hills which are naturally heated underground and then under pressure, rise to the surface. Bath Abbey is the main attraction in the city, where after a religious centre was established in the 7th century, saw its healing waters claimed by 17th century. Bath Spa was “officially born!” . Visitors can enjoy traditional afternoon tea and taste the thermal waters in The Pump Room and tour the Baths and museum.
There are numerous museums and galleries dotted around the town centre, which include the Museum of Bath Architecture, Victoria Art Gallery, Museum of East Asian Art, Herschel Museum of Astronomy and museum dedicated to one of Baths famous author, Jane Austen
Bath will please shoppers as there is a combination of quaint gift shops and national/international brands for souvenir browsing.
